 What is the UBS?
« Thread Started on Nov 11, 2008, 3:29am »

The UBS (Ultimate Battle Story) is a thrilling story concept originally developed by our very own Ranger and DVD. Justsnilloc and Ajax took it upon themselves to bring the concept to the KotoR universe, and the KotoR UBS was born. Needless to say, this site soon spawned from the idea, and we all arrived her somehow or other.

Essentially, the UBS can be described as such: all the action that goes on behind the scenes of the main stories we're all familiar with. While our heroes and heroines in KotoR have the crucial task of going off and finding the Star Maps, they are hardly the only people that exist in the story of KotoR. In fact, this can be said of any great event. There were behind-the-scenes events that occurred, and they were likely of great importance even if they were not on the forefront of the event.

This is exactly the case in the KotoR UBS. You the RPer take up the role of a character behind the scenes of Revan's thrilling tale, and it is through conflicts unseen to his eyes that you make your own story known. Additionally, you will be able to witness Revan's journey as you follow his path across the galaxy, occasionally forging your own path here and there.

~FAQ~

Q: I get the whole behind-the-scenes thing, but can I ever be... in the scenes, so to speak?

A: The key aspect of the UBS is that we create our own scenes and display that not everything of importance has to be known to everyone. That being said, if you really want to participate in, say, the Wookiee Rebellion on Kashyyk, feel free to jump on in there.

Q: Can I talk to Revan or [insert character here]?

A: I would greatly prefer that you did not do this. Interaction with the cast of the games would put your character on the forefront of the action and make him or her a direct part of Revan's story. The idea here is to be in the background, unnoticed by Revan or the other cast yet still doing things of immense importance to their quest.

Q: Can my character be related to [insert character here]?

A: Not unless you provide one hell of an explanation for why we never heard about this relative in the game. It really would take you more effort to convince me to allow it than it would for you to come up with a different and less hackneyed character design. You should strive for unique character designs, not designs that we all associate with other characters.

Q: Can I be a Jedi/Do I have to be a Jedi?

A: This is Star Wars. Jedi are not only vastly more populous in this time than they are in the movies, but they are a big part of the galaxy. Thus, it is more understandable that more of you would be Jedi. That being said, a FAR greater portion of the galaxy are not Jedi or Sith, and I find these designs much more unique most of the time. The choice is yours, but do bear in mind that Force Users will hold a slightly more prominent role in the story.

Q: What about being evil? Can I be a baddie?

A: Of course you can. Naturally, every major event has at least two conflicting sides, so it would be perfectly acceptable if you took up the role of the Sith rather than the Jedi/Republic. However, you'll find it harder to integrate yourself into the main story, as it will be more centric to the "heroes" on the Light Side.

Q: I can totally use [arbitrary Force Power], right? Even if I'm on the [insert alignment here]?

A: This is not KotoR the game. Thus, the only real penalty you get for using Powers of an opposing alignment is one that you inflict on yourself. However, it would be nonsensical for any Jedi to be able to spam Force Storm or some other Power. Likewise, a Sith wouldn't be expected to be good at Healing Powers. Try to at least be logical with your Power selection and usage.

Q: Can I invent Force Powers for my character?

A: I'm always open to customization and creativity when it comes to things like this. Especially for Light Siders, who have a limited repertoire of offensive Powers and could use some new ones. However, I advise that you describe and detail your invented Power extremely well and do your best to explain it properly. Otherwise, confusion will ensue. If you're unsure how to describe or explain a Power, or if you think your idea might be overpowered, feel free to PM me and run the idea by me first.

Q: How many characters can I have?

A: I always like ambitious writers who can manage multiple characters. However, there comes a few issues with this. First of all, more character means less screen time or focus for each of them, or neglect for some and too much focus for others. Second, more characters means more of the story revolves around you and what you control. This can lead to competitive posting and character spamming to gain more control of the story. I don't think you guys will have such problems, but just in case, I will limit your character total to three. After all, three is company.

Two men known as Ranger and DVD brought forth the tale of the UBS. One man, the Lost King JS, brought fame and renown to the tale. Now, a fourth man has arrived, to bring the tale into eternity....
